With keen interest I have watched all the news reports of the Confederate battle flag being removed from public arenas. For every one removed it seems as though hundreds more pop up on private property in protest. The Kentucky Fair officials and Kentucky State Parks have taken stands to eliminate any public display of the Confederate flag or to even allow items to be sold that have a symbol of the Confederate flag on them.
There is clamoring by the NAACP and a few Kentucky politicians for Jefferson Davis’ statue to be removed from the state Capitol rotunda. A prudent 7 to 2 decision on August 5th by the Historic Properties Advisory Commission will prevent the statue from being removed, for now. Confederate war hero monuments are being defaced and demands made to remove them. Is the next step to have individual Confederate grave markers removed and even their remains dug up? Will Civil War reenactments be banned? Where will this “historical genocide” appeasement end? Slave ships sailed under the American flag. Should it also be banned?
Some historians seem to think that the Civil War was solely about slavery. I disagree. Very few soldiers who followed the Confederate flag or the American flag into battle ever owned a slave. If a poll had been taken then, I think most of the Southern people would side with ending slavery. Soldiers do not sit around discussing the reasons for the war. Nearly all are forced to go into battle because they were drafted, threatened with jail, or are mentally manipulated into thinking they are fighting for a noble cause. Most soldiers in the Civil War (Confederate and Union) just wanted to go home to their families and loved ones. Personally, I think the Confederate soldiers were mostly fighting to prevent the Union Army from invading and laying waste to their ‘homelands’, as well as trying to prevent the Federal Government from trampling all over their state rights. There still seems to be a lot of federal meddling in states’ rights even today—definition of a marriage is a recent example. There are a lot of Southern folks who are proud of their forefathers that fought and died as they followed that flag into battle.
If all symbols of the Confederacy are removed and all white people were perfect, it would do very little to solve the problems black people are experiencing. The black illegitimacy rate in this country is 70% or better. Nearly 7,000 blacks are murdered each year. Ninety-five percent of the time they are murdered by other blacks—not white perpetrators or white policemen. Black students are suffering from a lack of education, even when black officials are in charge. Black youth are experiencing 30% unemployment rates in the larger cities. In 2011 there was an all-time high of black elected officials in our nation, including a black president but no significant gains have been made in resolving these problems. Instead of trying to ease these roadblocks to prosperity, national black leaders and the liberal-minded national media seem bent on aggravating the tensions between the races. For some, that’s how they make their living.
When I was a child if I spoke disrespectfully to an elder or used foul language I could count on having my mouth washed out with soap. If I got a spanking at school, there would be another when I got home. There was no such thing as ‘time out’. Dressing and acting in a gentlemanly manner was mandatory. My peers and I were expected to behave according to Christian conservative values of our parents who were considered America’s “Greatest Generation” by Tom Brokaw. All that began to change in the 1960’s when the nation’s liberals gained a strong foothold and began waging war on our traditional values, customs, and morality. They began preaching to our youth that what’s moral or immoral is a personal choice. As the liberals gained positions of power in our school systems, the national media and our government, their teachings have usurped our traditional values. These same values are what our nation’s founders used to forge this once great nation. After nearly 75 years of liberal man-handling of our basic human moral values and their trying to create total equality, do you think we are better off as a society? Nobel laureate Milton Friedman may have said it best, “A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both.”
A much divided Supreme Court recently decided that a marriage is not just between a man and a woman, over the objections of the majority of the voters in most states. Partners of the same sex can now be considered a marriage. Will polygamous relationships be the next group to be considered a marriage? In the light of this recent ruling, how can it be prevented? The national media and the liberal do-gooders are hammering away to force this issue down our throats and to mold the minds of our youth into thinking this is acceptable behavior. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy compared the controversy over the court’s decision to allow gay marriage to the public outcry over the 1989 ruling that said burning the American flag was protected free speech. Essentially he said we will get over it. I still think that only honorable treatment of our flag is acceptable, plus I for one will never agree that anything other than a union between a man and a woman is a marriage. Call it a civil union, secure the monetary benefits wanted, and practice your private affairs behind closed doors. I wish everyone happiness in whatever relationship they choose, but do it with dignity. All this hoopla over Bruce Jenner’s transformation into a woman is a bit overdone. Again the news media wants to convince us that this is such a good thing. The ones making all the money from this ‘reality show’ have a smile as they make their bank deposits. The whole circus brings to mind the 70’s song, ‘Lola,’ by the Kinks–“I might be dumb but I don’t understand, why she walks like a woman and talks like a man.” Again I wish Bruce (or Caitlyn) all the happiness, but please leave it off the TV.
Planned Parenthood—In light of the recent revelations about this organization I am in favor of defunding it. When and how did they get their fingers into the taxpayers’ piggy bank to the tune of $500 million anyway? Our government should not be funding an organization that aborts babies and sells the body parts. We are made to feel guilty because a criminal might feel pain as he is apprehended or put to death for his or her crimes, but the do-gooders turn a blind eye to the pain these innocent aborted babies suffer as they are killed and torn into pieces.
Black people killed by police each year is but a drop in the bucket when compared to the black babies aborted each year. As Dostoevsky is attributed by some as saying, “If God does not exist, everything is permitted.”
Another one of our biggest problems in this country is the national economy. Ross Perot warned us in the 90’s that NAFTA and the Asian trade agreements would trigger a great sucking sound of jobs leaving this country. Has that not happened? When do you ever see anything that is labeled “Made in America?” Since these trade agreements went into effect there have been more than 60,000 factories closed in this country and we have lost nearly a million jobs. Look what has happened in our state. What you think is ‘good ole American corporations’ are now global corporations. They have deserted us in favor of cheap labor in other countries. The consumers of the United States are merely sheep to feed their profits. As Thomas Jefferson said, “Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that which they draw their gains.” Currently they are drawing their gains from cheap foreign labor. The whole immigration fiasco is to bring more cheap labor here. Currently President Obama is trying to get Congress to pass the TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) so he can use it to fast-track the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) trade deal. Our trade deficit with these countries is already enormous and this will make it worse. I hope it is defeated.
Have you observed what’s happened to Greece in recent months? The country of Greece is bankrupt. I lived in Greece for 3 years in the mid-1980s. When a socialist leader was elected, he began passing out government benefits like they were candy. His policies drove companies like MMM, where I was employed, from the country. The Greek people lost nearly 100 good paying architectural/engineering jobs when MMM left. The country was highly unionized and always on strike. They have no manufacturing base any longer, if they ever had one. I predicted then, that Greece would finally become bankrupt. They are, and their people are suffering. If we do not change our policies at the national level it will happen here within a generation. As columnist Walter Williams recently stated, “If it were only the economic decline threatening our future, there might be hope. It’s the moral decline that spells our doom.”
The majority is being made to feel guilty for the problems of minority factions of our society and seem bent on granting them every appeasement. The ‘silent majority’ in this country is just that—silent. Perhaps we have become the ‘silenced majority.’
