Editor’s note: The Citizen Voice and Times is pleased to welcome Kaleigh Underwood, an intern from EKU, who will be working with us this summer. Please make her feel welcome as you see her out and about.
Hello, my name is KaLeigh Underwood. I am the Citizen Voice and Times summer intern working through the Kentucky Press Association.
I am originally from Olive Hill, Kentucky, (Carter County), but I have been living in Richmond the past three years to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
At EKU, I am a journalism major and an appalachian studies minor. I will be a senior in the fall and plan to graduate in May 2016.
I am passionate about all things Kentucky, and take pride in my small-town raising. I am a lover of elephants, and I’m crazy over my two cats.
My journalism career started writing for my high school newspaper and continued whenever I got to EKU. I have been a writer for The Eastern Progress, the student publication at EKU, all three years I have been at school there. In that time, I have written for the news, features, and the perspectives sections. I have held the positions of Features Editor, Online Editor, and in the fall I will be the Perspectives Editor.
Growing up in a town even smaller than Irvine, I feel at home already. It’s easy to feel welcome here when everyone has been so helpful in my first weeks, both in the office and in the community.
My future plans include hopefully working for a small-town newspaper or an appalachian-focused magazine/website. Eventually, I would like to pursue a masters degree in appalachian studies. And if my busy life allows it, I would love to take time to travel.
I am so very thankful for the opportunity to serve the Citizen Voice and Times as their summer intern and can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer holds for me as I get to continue meeting the people who make Irvine so great.
