Four Estill County Band students were accepted into All-Regional Band after they auditioned Sunday at Eastern Kentucky University.
Matthew Smith was named first chair in the symphonic band. He plays baritone saxophone. First chair in the symphonic band is the top spot in the region.
Kourtney Emmert is seventh chair concert band, playing the flute.
Austin McClanahan is 12th chair trumpet in concert band.
Alex Hall is seventh chair trumpet in the concert band. She is an eighth grader.
“I can’t remember a time when a middle school aged student earned a chair in high school all regional band,” Director Jason Bowles said. “What an accomplishment. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.”
Bowles said the students spent countless hours of individual practice time preparing audition pieces.
“They were asked to perform two parts of a prepared piece as well as sight reading a piece,” Bowles said. “They auditioned in front of two judges.”
The Bluegrass All-Regional Band Concert will be Saturday Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Madison Central High School auditorium.
“I encourage everybody to attend,” Bowles said.
