Most of us are planning our Christmas dinners and buying gifts for our loved ones at this time.
We are blessed.
But there are those who aren’t as blessed as we are. They aren’t worried about Christmas dinner or gifts.
They just want to know if they will have anything to eat today.
Estill County has a God’s Pantry in place. Debra Rogers supervises it.
On the third Tuesday of every month, anybody can go to Ravenna to the building that once housed the youth center to get food. They need a copy of something that has a proof of address and they need some form of identification. If they qualify on income level, they will receive a box of food.
A one person household with a gross income of $1,174 qualifies for monthly commodities.
$405 may be added to the gross monthly income for each person in the household. For example a four person household would be allowed to have a total gross income of $2,389.
On the fourth Tuesday of the month those people who are referred by several different agencies in the county may pick up their commodities. But what of people who are in dire need today?
Debra said these people should go to Kentucky River Foothills or the school resource centers and ask for help.
There is no need for anybody to be hungry in our community. There are too many people willing to help.
Debra said there are 17 churches who give monthly monetary donations. The local Kiwanis Club is also a contributor. These contributions make helping those in emergency situations possible.
She said there are about 25 wonderful volunteers with big hearts who are at the pantry every time the doors are open just because they want to help.
To see people come together to help those less fortunate is heartwarming all year long, but especially at Christmas.
If you need help feeding your family or you know somebody who needs help don’t be afraid to ask Kentucky River Foorthills or go to your child’s school family resource center. They so want to help.
We also have a wonderful Toys for Tots program here. It is a good opportunity to share your blessings with others.
Check out the local dollar stores. They have great toys at good prices.
And when you get the chance to donate to the food bank you will be blessed for that as well.
There are lots of good things going on in town this weekend.
The Elizabeth Witt Christmas Party is so much fun for kids.
And the parade is fun for all ages.
Do some Christmas shopping at the arts council celebration at central office.
Then top off the day by going to the community chorus/ jazz band Christmas concert at the Irvine United Methodist Church on Main Street at 7 p.m.
So come out and celebrate Jesus’ birth and enjoy fellowship with other community members.
It is, after all, the most wonderful time of the year.
Well I would sure like to read Sarah Palin’s book, but I don’t want to buy it.
Sometimes I get books for free to review for the newspaper.
I don’t like recommending books, because people have such varied tastes in reading material.
I read for the same reason I watch television and it isn’t to keep up with the national newsmakers.
So I tend to read what most people would categorize as trashy novels and I watch a lot of silly reality television and situation comedies just to be entertained.
But I am intrigued by this woman so maybe I will go to the library and see if her book is there.
She might be our next president…who knows?
