On Saturday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. a free chili supper will be served to all veterans and active military personal at the American Legion dining room. This dinner is sponsored by the 4-H cooking club.
Body Fitness Classes
The Body Fitness Exercise classes led by Sister Loretta Spotila, RN, will end the fall sessions on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The winter sessions will begin again in January. For more information call 723-8505.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Light up Rivertown to be exact! On Saturday, Nov. 21 the Estill County FBLA is hosting the annual Light up Rivertown. We are also teaming up with the Estill County FCCLA who have asked Santa to come. He had Rudolph himself deliver the letter saying he would be there. The fee for a photograph with Santa is $5 and the picture comes in a holiday card. The FCCLA will also be offering lollipops, embroidered shirts and other items for sale. Bring your children and even your pets out to Light up Rivertown and take a picture with Santa.
EKU Madrigal Feaste
Eastern Kentucky University will present its 35th annual Madrigal Feastes on Friday, Dec. 11, and Saturday, Dec. 12. Advance tickets for the community favorite can be purchased for $26 each in the Colonel 1 Card office, located in Room 17 on the main floor of the Powell Building. Visa and MasterCard reservations may be made by calling 859-622-2179. The University Singers, under the direction of Dr. Sue Ellen Ballard and accompanied by faculty and student instrumentalists on period instruments, will present the music for the event, which recreates the song, dance and festivities of 16th century English madrigal dinners. Guests will also enjoy a five-course meal, prepared and served by Aramark Dining Services. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with seating beginning at 6:45 p.m. The first fanfare will sound at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the EKU Department of Music.
Basic Computer Skills Class
This four-evening session is for those who need to learn or review basic fundamental computer skills or terminology. Through hands-on experience, we will cover basic tools to access the internet, create simple letters and reports, practice using tool bars, creating files, setting up email accounts and much more. Gingerbread House Contest
As the Estill County FBLA celebrates the holiday season with their annual Light Up Rivertown, all children are invited to participate in the gingerbread house contest. The only rules are to be creative and to have your delectable creation turned in at the courthouse before noon on Saturday, Nov. 21, to be judged. The competition is for children of all ages, no adults can enter. So gather up your candy canes and gumdrops; and come on out to show your creative holiday spirit.
The Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society Christmas meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Estill County Historical and Genealogical Society’s Research Center and Museum at 6 p.m. Please bring a covered dish. There will be a silent auction.
The Appalachian Dulcimer Club is offering free lessons on Fridays at 5 p.m. at the Estill County Public Library. The only requirement is to bring your own dulcimer.
Light Up Rivertown
On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Estill County FBLA will host their 10th annual Light up Rivertown. This year’s activities include live entertainment, a Christmas craft fair, horse drawn carriage ride, and many other events. The craft fair will start at 10 a.m. Booths are still open to anyone who wants to display their crafts. Call Ms. Witt, 723-3537 during the school day. The carriage ride is free with a non-perishable food donation to Estill County Food Bank. The Estill/Powell counties Kentucky ASAP (Agency on Substance Abuse Policy) Board will be providing a series of five parenting classes for free. Leaders will use the evidence-based curriculum, Guiding Good Choices, geared for parents and caregivers of children ages 9-14 years of age. Classes will be held every Tuesday at the Ravenna Church of the Nazarene from 6:30-8 p.m. through Nov. 23. Financial Peace Classes
Financial Peace Classes meet every Wednesday for 12 weeks from now to Dec. 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Estill County Library. To register call 859-624-4116, ext. 306. There is no cost to residents of Estill, Powell, Madison or Clark counties (a service of foothills CAP).
The Estill County Community Food Bank needs to stock the shelves of the pantry. A collection container will be located in the Extension Office and other places where donations of non-perishable items (canned, boxed foods, etc.) may be dropped off. Please help support this worthy program to help the less fortunate.
Mommie and Me
Mommie and Me Storytime groups will be every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and every Friday at 10:30 a.m. These groups are for children ages 2 through 5. Bring your child to the library for a story, an art activity, and a snack. Call 723-3030 for more information.
