Rhonda’s Remarks by Rhonda Smyth, CV&T News Editor
I have certainly taken a beating (figuratively) over my continued opinion that making alcohol sales legal in Estill County won’t help anything.
I am still not convinced that it will save lives as some people keep saying (which makes no sense to me) or bring jobs and added revenue to the county.
I have heard all the arguments. But not one person has said to me directly or indirectly how it will help our children either now or in the future.
And doesn’t that need to be our priority?
Not whether you or I want or don’t want alcohol sold here legally. But how will it improve the quality of life, not for just a few but for everyone?
I’m not even going to go into how totally ridicules the argument about it keeping drunk drivers off the roads is.
Estill County is seeing progress right now with the improvements on the Ravenna Veteran’s Memorial Park, development of the Kentucky River Park and Recreation Complex, the new Emergency Operations Center and radio towers, WestCare, courthouse renovation and most importantly the new sanitary wastewater treament facility that is soon to be built.
Looks to me like our energy could be better spent in helping in the park construction or volunteering at the hospital or nursing home, than trying to get the sales of alcohol made legal here.
Not all change is good, so be carefull what you wish for.
And speaking of the new radio tower on Broadway…every time I come across the old Irvine bridge and see that tower, it makes me proud.
Talk about something making us look like a 21st century town.
And it is not costing taxpayers one dime. It is being paid for by CSEPP funds.
Maintenance on the tower will be paid for by companies who wish to lease space on the tower, like cell phone companies.
I think the new tower is beautiful and it makes me happy to see it.
