The Estill County High School Football Engineers ended regular season play with a hard fought victory over Madison Southern last Friday night in Berea.
Junior running back, Kenton Roberts led the scoring for the Engineers with five touchdowns. The final score was 42-40. Roberts, who has attracted the attention of several colleges in his junior season, scored on runs of 11, 8, 13, 80, and 3 yards.
After being up 35-18 at the start of the final quarter, the Engineers looked as if they would cruise to an easy victory, but Brown had other ideas, tacking on his final TD with a 70-yard scamper.
Despite having one of the state’s best running backs, Southern closed out regular season play with a mark of 1-9. Estill has a 6-4 record for the season.
Estill will line up against Taylor County on Friday in the opening round of the district football playoffs.
The Engineers earned the right to host the contest by finishing as the district’s number two seed.
Taylor is coming off a 4-5 season that saw them win two of their last three contests.
Common foes faced this season include Garrard County and Somerset.
On Oct. 16, the Cardinals defeated Garrard in convincing fashion, 26-12. Estill also owns a win over the Golden Lions, but only by a 42-41 count in the third game of the season.
Taylor was destroyed by Somerset 62-15 midway through the season, while the Engineers threw a scare into the still undefeated Briar Jumpers before falling 27-14 on the home field.
