I don’t know what the world is coming to. I remember the days when everyone was eager to help each other in time of need.
I’m reading a book set in the early 1900s. A young couple is planning to get married and the whole community gets together and builds them a new barn and a new house. I’ve read other stories and have seen movies depicting this same kind of generosity and help from people. That’s a “Love thy neighbor” kind of thing.
Well, I had an experience the other day that I needed help with, but no one came to my rescue.
I picked my dog up from the groomer’s the other day and was standing on the sidewalk waiting for traffic to clear so I could cross the street to my car. Finally, traffic stopped down at the Irvine bridge because a dog walked out into the middle of the street and just stopped there. Not thinking anything about the situation except that traffic had stopped, I started to cross the street with my dog (on a leash, of course). I got in the middle of the street when that other dog spotted my dog and ran to catch up with us. That dog immediately attacked my dog in the middle of the street.
My dog and I were both surprised and it took a minute to respond. My dog just crumbled to the street when this happened, yelping, and the other dog was on top of her in it’s attack mode. Well, I wasn’t going to stand there and let that mutt eat my dog up, so my instincts kicked in and I was trying to get that dog off of my dog.
There I was, an elderly lady in the middle of Main Street, traffic stopped and lined up on both sides of me, my dog was being attacked, and I was trying to get her to get up and was trying to run the other dog away. I was pulling on the leash to get my dog up and using the other end of the leash trying to hit the other dog and run it off. All the time I was yelling “git, git” to that other dog, my mind was thinking “what if this dog turns and attacks me?”
Well, I finally got my dog up on her feet and we ran to the car, the other dog following us. We did get in the car unscathed, no thanks to any of the people that witnessed the ordeal.
What ever happened to the Good Samaritan we learned about in the Bible? All those people sitting in their cars in traffic, many of them were men, and nobody came to help me. I guess they were enjoying my struggle. I wonder what they would have done or not done if that dog had attacked me? Would you all have just sat and watched?
