Just how far Coach Danny Hwang’s team has progressed this season was made crystal clear on Saturday.
Hosting the top ranked team in the 16th Region, Estill’s girls gave Letcher County Central all they wanted and more, before falling 3-1.
Central saw their record improve to 11-2-1 as they prepare to make a run through tourney play.
Another top team from the 16th Region, Perry County Central, escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Lady Engineers on Monday.
After traveling to Menifee County on Tuesday, the girls will close out regular season action on Thursday at 6-6-2 Madison Central.
They’ll be back on the same field Monday to take on Berea in the first round of the 28th District Tournament.
The two teams have faced off twice this season with Berea taking wins of 5-0 and 5-2.
After going winless last season, Estill is now 6-10-2 and showing continued improvement.
Coach Hwang notes that part of the credit for improvement is due to playing against strong competition, and learning from them.
He cites a recent match-up with Model as a prime example.
“During our matches against Model, I watched as their players flawlessly maneuvered mini-games across our entire defense. If Estill is to be competitive with the Madison teams, we have got to master this style of play,” he said.
