Even though it looked like it was going to be a washout, with almost a 50 percent chance of rain, seven high school golf teams came from around the state to the Estill County Golf Club Saturday morning to participate in the 11th annual Estill County High School Golf Invitational.
After a brief meeting with Estill’s Golf coach, Rick Benton, the golfers were set to play 18 holes against each other.
Even though the chance of rain was more likely than not, the sun came out and highs were in the upper 80s for the majority of the day.
After almost six hours of golf, the scores were in and there was a two-way tie between Jackson County’s Jaaron Hignite and Madison Southern’s John Robinson for the individual winner of the tournament, both players shot four over par, for a 76. Three shots into the first playoff hole, both players we’re set up for a great birdie opportunity and a chance to go to another playoff hole but, Robinson fell short, missing his putt by only a few inches allowing Hignite to sink his birdie putt and become the champion.
Estill’s Golf Team finished 3rd shooting a 316, only three strokes behind winner Jackson County and one stroke behind runner-up Powell County.
Estill’s second team finished 5th shooting a 340.
