Darrell Glenn Tipton, 53
Darrell Glenn Tipton, 53, of Glyn Court in Irvine, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at the Compassionate Care Center after a short illness. He was born April 4, 1957, in Madison County and was the son of the late James Wesley and Beulah Mae Tipton. He was a mechanic and had lived in Estill County all of his life. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Tipton; a sister, Teresa Sparks; and a brother, Rick Tipton.
Survivors include his wife, Terri Michelle Gollihue Tipton; five daughters, Kelley Barger and husband, Wade of Jackson County, Missy Jones of Berea, Tonya Randall of Madison County, Sha Mullins and husband, Buddy of Estill County and Whitney Tipton also of Estill County; a son, Bobby Goosey and wife, Kathy of Madison County; a sister, Vicki David of Estill County; and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Feb. 27, 2011, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Mike Davis. Burial was at the Grey Cemetery. Pallbearers were Buddy Mullins, Aaron Stone, Mark Hinds, Paul Tipton, Scott Stamper, Buzzy Horn, Leon Anglin, and Will Tipton. Honorary Pallbearers were Will Tipton, David Stone, Dewayne Tipton, Eddie Davis, Caton Davis, Tyler Davis and Moody Stone.
Kathern Patton Relford, 85
Kathern Patton Relford, 85, of Opossum Run Road in Irvine, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Beattyville, and was the daughter of the late Silas Dee and Stella Brandenburg Patton. She was a homemaker and attended the Sandhill Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Relford; four sisters, Zora Dunaway, Rhoda Stanford, Martha Barbee and Bonnie Lynch; and six brothers, Fred, Leslie, Vernon, Mooney, Charlie and Ralph Patton.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane Wilson and husband, Terry of Milford, Ohio, and Janice King and husband, Don, also of Milford, Ohio; a sister, Dollie Newman of Irvine; six grandchildren, Sandy Mittendorf, Karen King, Melissa Williamson, Pam Daniel, Kristen Marcum and Rachael Wilson; seven great-grandchildren, Danielle Mittendorf, Kyle Williamson, Kelsey Williamson, Kellie King, Blake King, Hollie Daniel and Jimmy Marcum; and one great-great-grandchild, Amirah Cole.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Feb. 21, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Matt Vaught. Burial was at the Graceland Memorial Gardens.
Melvin Rader, 62
Melvin Rader, 62, of Cantrill Street, husband of Janice Long Estes, died Wednesday at his home after a long illness. He was born in Estill County on Oct. 7, 1948, a son of Leova Barrow and the late Clarence Rader. He was a retired construction worker, a member of the American Legion, and the Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Jewel Rader; and two sisters, Eudelle and Thelma Rader.
Survivors include his wife Janice Long Estes; a son, Lafayette (Diana) Rader; a daughter, Leona Griffin; his mother Leova Barrow; his siblings Clayton Rader, Lillian Brockelsby and Ethel (Gayle) Reynolds; and three grandchildren, Keven Griffin, Volina Ervin and Lana Materly.
Services were held Friday, 2 p.m., at Lewis Funeral Home, with Bro. Scott Rogers officiating. Burial was at the Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Tucker, Kevin Griffin, Donald McIntosh, Doug Chaney, Russell Morris, and Larry Reed.
Danny Joe Thacker, 37
Danny Joe Thacker 37, died Friday Feb. 18, 2011, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington. He was born March 10, 1973 in Lexington to Waveline Thacker Gabbard and Danny Gabbard of Estill County Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Charles Thacker and Toad Abney and step father Tommy McHone and uncle Jimmy Thacker.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Jospeh and Joshua Tyler Thacker of Somerset; his grandmothers, Vadis Abney of Ravenna and Martha Hurley of Berea; a step-sister, Carla McHone; three step-brothers, Tracy, Tony, and Cecil McHone all of Berea; two aunts, Debra Thacker, and June Lamb; uncles include Donnie, and Eddie Thacker, June Bug Abney, and several aunts and uncles in Berea, Richmond and Estill aCounty. Cousins Tina Gabbard, Jackie, Tammy, Tonya, Melissa, Christy and many more. A special little man Jayden Thacker and niece Lankstin Thacker that put a special light in his heart, and a host of special friends and family.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at 2 p.m., at the Crestview Holy Sanctuary with Bro. Eddie Lainhart officiating. Pallbearers were Mark Berry, June Bug Abney, Tony Bowman, Thomas Bowman, Jason Chasteen, and Eddie Thacker. Honorary pallbearers were Leslie Rawlins, Farley Neil, Keith Weaver, Eric Thacker, Michael Abney, Gobel Cundiff and Jeff Lamb. Dewey Allen McKinney, 66, of Cox Road in Irvine, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was born April 11, 1944, in Lee County and was the son of the late Buell and Nannie Lynch McKinney. He was a concrete finisher and attended the New Bethel Baptist #2 Church. He had lived in Estill County all of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Angel McKinney; a sister, Lillie Hopper Mayese; and two brothers, Beverly Paul McKinney and Jesse Hopper.
Survivors include three sons, Dewey McKinney Jr., and David McKinney, both of Irvine, and Steven McKinney and wife, Karin of Deltona, Fla.; a sister, Geraldine Faye Wolfinbarger, Irvine; five brothers, James McKinney, Cincinnati, Ohio, Ray McKinney, Irvine, Ronnie McKinney, Sadieville, Beull McKinney Jr., Georgetown, and John McKinney, Irvine; two grandchildren, Stevin Anthony McKinney and Romin Allen McKinney.

Lenlie Audrey Abney, 76
Lenlie Audrey Abney, 76, of Cobb Hill Road in Irvine, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at St. Joseph Hospital East after a short illness. He was born Sept. 26, 1934 in Estill County and was the son of the late Everett and Myrtle Rogers Abney. He was a retired Bluegrass Army Depot employee and had lived in Estill County all of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Dustin Abney; and a grandson, Bradley Everett Abney.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ann Kershow and Teresa Lynn Nealey, both of Estill County; a son, Daniel Abney of Estill County; two sisters, Jewell Robins-Burgess of Nicholasville, Belva Bennett of Estill County; three brothers, Arthur Abney, Donald Abney and James Abney, all of Estill County; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Gainus Rogers. Burial was at the Cobb Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Abney, Roy Nealey, Shawn Rogers, Rebecca Rogers, Mark Patrick and Eric Patrick.
John Alton McConkey, 79
John Alton McConkey, 79, of Kettering, Ohio, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at the Heartland of Centerville. He was born, Nov. 13, 1931 in Estill County and was the son of the late Alton Leonard “Tony” and Adda Lee Elliott McConkey. He was the programming director at the the Wright Patterson Air Force Base and was a United States Navy veteran. He was a member of the River Drive Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbye Joyce Crawford McConkey; four daughters, June Anne Runyon of Ocean Springs, Miss., Shelley Crawford McConkey of Lexington, Margaret Elliott Yohe of Centerville, Ohio and Sarah Elizabeth Bennett of Louisville; a son, John Michael McConkey of Lexington; one brother, Simpson McConkey of Richmond; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Paul Groves. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were his grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Humane Society of your choice.
Estill McBride Jr., 74
Estill “Junebug” McBride Jr., 74, of Rice Street, Irvine, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at the Central Baptist Hospital after a long illness. He was born Feb. 8, 1937, in Camp Creek, W.Va., the son of the late Estill Sr. and Goldie Pearl Lewis McBride. He was retired from the Galvanized Plant in Cinn., Ohio. He had lived in Estill County since 1972 and was a member of the Irvine Nazarene Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Hawkins McBride; and two brothers, Delmar and Woody “Duffy” McBride.
Survivors include a daughter, Faith Regina Newton and husband, Robert of Estill County; a son, Estill “Red” McBride III, of Estill County; two sisters, Lucille Delp of Columbus, Ohio and Tootsie Watkins of Amherst, Ohio; a brother, Alvin McBride of Newport; four grandchildren, Cassie LeAnna Richardson, Felica Ann Mays, Amanda Rose McBride and Brittney Nicole McBride; a great-grandson, Braylan Aaron Mays; and other family, loving companion Roselle Richardson, Pam and Keith Bradley, Howie Lynch, Janet Rose, Jeffery Crouch and Angela Banks.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 5, 2011, at 1 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Clint Strickland and Bro. Jimmy Lee Williams with burial to follow at the West Irvine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Bradley, Jeffery Crouch, Scott Newton, Steven Richardson, Ricky McBride and Brandon Mays. Robert Lewis Benton, 58
Robert Lewis “Butch” Benton, 58, of Grindstone Road in Irvine, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at the Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. He was a retired engineer with the L&N Railroad and was a member of the NRA and Gun Owners of America. He had lived in Estill County all of his life.
Survivors include his parents, James Herbert and Dorothy Marie Crowe of Estill County; two sons, Adam Ryan Benton and Brett Daniel Benton, both of Estill County; three sisters, Barbara Allen Benton of California, Donna McClanahan of Berea and Angela Kaye Crow of Lexington; and a brother, James David Crowe of Alabama.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Max Hester and Bro. Todd Blevins. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clarence Rison, Bobby Brandenburg, Mark Honchell, Shannon Johnson, Mike Mainour and Ralph McClanahan III.
