Eureka Drake, 85
Eureka Cooper Drake, 85, Eighth Street, Ravenna, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 at her home. She was born Aug. 22, 1924 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Roy Jefferson and Grace Mastin Cooper. She was a homemaker and a former member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Drake; a daughter, Pamela Louise Drake Hall of Irvine; two sisters Lois Blair of LaGrange and Wilma Sharp of Southgate, Mich.; one grandson, Brian Edward Hall of Irvine; three great-grandchildren, Cody Begley, Caleb Begley and Elisha Begley.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Thacker; and three brothers, Amile Thomas, Roy Cooper and Corky Cooper.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Gary McClanahan with burial at Oakdale Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Brian Hall, David Cooper, Jimmy Cooper, Clay Cooper, Ricky Caton and Tommy Miller.
Berlin Tipton, 83
Berlin Tipton, 83, of Dayton, Ohio, died Thursday. Sept. 17, 2009 at Heartland of Kettering Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 22, 1926 in Estill County to Hobert and Bessie Chaney Tipton. He was retired from Noble Trucking Company, Dayton Ohio. He is preceded in death by his wife, Maude (Risen) Tipton; son Buddy Glenn Tipton; step daughters Brenda Sue Markwell and Judy Ashcraft; sisters Estine Estes, Fren Tipton, and Lola Durbin; brothers Ford, Bea, Jay, and Shelby Tipton.
He is survived by his son Billy (Lisa) Tipton, of Dayton; step-sons Jimmy ?Leon? (Sharon) Muncie, and Gary (Vicky) Muncie, of Kentucky; step-daughters Faye (James) Tipton, of Lebanon, Ohio, Margaret Stamper, of Kentucky, and Jean (Leroy) McIntosh of North Carolina; son-in-law David Markwell, of Dayton, Ohio; daughter-in-law Brenda Tipton, of Dayton, Ohio; grandsons Matthew and Bradley Tipton, of Dayton, Ohio; granddaughter Jessica Tipton, of Dayton, Ohio; great-granddaughters Aubrey?Anna Tipton and Hailey (Tipton) Bowling; brothers William ?Pidge? (Joyce) Tipton, and Glenwood ?Woody? (Bertha) Tipton, both of Estill County; several step grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday Sept. 21, 2009 at Lewis Funeral Home, with burial at West-Irvine Cemetery.
George Coomer, 71
George M. Coomer, 71, Boston Road, Lexington, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 at his home following a long illness. He was born May 15, 1938 in Estill County, the son of the late Robert and Grace Price Coomer. He was a retired United States Postal Service employee, and a United States Air Force veteran. He had lived in Lexington most of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Lois Richardson Coomer; one daughter, Karen Kaye Mahaney and husband Robert of Lexington; one son, Kevin Keith Coomer and wife Colette of Union; two sisters, Nelle Peterson of Antioch, Ill., and Pat Earlywine of Loveland, Ohio; two grandchildren, Kristen Lea Coomer and Collin Keith Coomer.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jean Cochran, Juanita Richardson, and Anna Jane Coomer; and three brothers, Robert, Lloyd and Ben Coomer.
Graveside services were conducted Friday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens by Bro. Bob Reynolds.
Pallbearers were Steven Richardson, Jeff Peterson, Mike Richardson, Robert Earlywine, John B. Shannon and Mike Finley.
Donations are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Debra Becknell, 51
Debra Ann Becknell, 51, wife of Marvin Becknell, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at the Memorial Hospital in Manchester. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 2, 1958, to Bennett and Marion (Izzo) Blanton of Irvine. She was a homemaker, a former restaurant employee, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Island City.
Along with her parents, and her husband of 27 years, she is survived by a son, Michael Becknell of Manchester; two daughters, Jessica (Richard) Doty of Irvine, and Kimberly Becknell of Booneville; a stepdaughter, Rebecca (Jeff) Abner of Manchester; and four grandchildren, Richard, Jr., Angela, Dillion, and Nathaniel; six sisters, Karen Stone of Richmond, Mary Ballard, Tina McIntosh, and Marie Flynn, all of Irvine, Bonnie Briggs of Raleigh, N.C., and Denise Ellis of Louisville; a brother, Benjamin Blanton of Louisville; her paternal grandmother, Bertha Blanton of Irvine and a host of friends and relatives.
Funeral services were at the First Baptist Church of Island City, in Island City, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, with Rev. Harold Becknell and Rev. Keith Murray officiating. Interment was at the Island City Baptist Church Cemetery in Island City with the Booneville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Elwanda Brewer, 73
Elwanda Brewer, 73, 33 Derickson Lane, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 at Stanton Nursing Center. She was born Aug. 28, 1936 in Winchester to the late John Corbett and Lorene Berryman Brewer.
Survivors include a brother, Woody and wife, Maxine Brewer, Clay City; a sister, Elouise and husband, Gus Pence, Stanton; sister-in-Law, Faye Brewer, Stanton; niece, Sandy and husband, Silas Smith, Stanton; nephews, Eddie Brewer, Clay City, Steven and wife, Tracy Brewer, Clay City, James and wife, Quay Brewer, Lexington, and Brian and wife, Jennifer Brewer, Campton; great-nephew, Ryan Ellis Brewer, Campton; great-nieces, Destine and husband, Travis Rogers, Owingsville, Whitney Brewer, Clay City, McKenzie Brewer, Clay City, Hannah Brewer, Campton, and Katie Brewer, Irvine; great-great-nephew, Kaden Michael Rogers, Owingsville; aunts, Blanche Tipton and Zella Shortridge, both of Irvine; and a host of cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Ellis Brewer; great-nephew, Jonathan Edward Brewer; and special uncle Louie Wayne Berryman.
Funeral services Thursday 1 p.m. Wells Funeral Home, Stanton by Rev. James Harold Combs with burial at Kennon Cemetery, Clay City.
Pallbearers serving were Steven Brewer, Travis Rogers, Monty Berryman, Marvin Berryman, and James Ed Dennis. Honorary pallbearers serving were friends and employees at Stanton Nursing Center.
Edna Dawes, 91
Edna Earle Billings Dawes, 91, Watson Ridge Road, Ravenna, wife of Floyd Lee Dawes, died Friday, at the Irvine Health and Rehab Center, after an illness. She was born Sept. 29, 1917 in Estill County, a daughter of the late Birk and Mallie Chaney Billings. She was a member of the Furnace Church of Christ and a retired restaurant employee and manager. She was preceded in death by her five sisters and two brothers; Katherine and Idna Reed, Crystal Spence, Nannie Winburn, Eula Lovins, Ernest and Warren Billings.
Survivors in addition to her husband Floyd Lee, include two daughters, Myra Joyce (Dean) Snyder of Hamilton, Ohio and Karen Machele (Tom) Colley of Sterling Heights Mich.; one son; Edward Lee (Mary) Dawes of Loveland Ohio; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m., Monday at Lewis Funeral Home by Bro. Terry Barnes with burial at the Billings-Newkirk Cemetery at Furnace.
Grandchildren served as pallbearers.
Beulah Shouse, 92
Beulah Gladys Blythe Shouse, 92, Estill Avenue, Irvine, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009 at the Kentucky River Medical Center after a short illness. She was born July 29, 1917 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Francis Marion and Nannie Belle Hamilton Blythe. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Zion Christian Church. She had lived in Estill County all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Omer Shouse; eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Moore and husband, Edward of Dayton, Ohio, and Doris Hudson and husband, James of Berea; two sons, Bobby Shouse and wife, Karen of Irvine, and Tony Shouse and wife, Louise of Richmond; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens by Bro. Tim Gipson. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Gary Moore, Chris Hudson, Larry Crosthwaite, Jamie Fielder, Paul Gibson and Brian Moore.
