I have been sad this week due to the death of Patrick Swayze on Monday. He battled pancreatic cancer and lost.
Who can forget how wonderful he was in Dirty Dancing, Red Dawn and Ghost?
In addition to being a fantastic dancer, he also seemed to be a decent human being and was married to the same woman for many years.
It was painful to watch him in “The Beast,” the last television series he was in. But oh he sure looked good in the earlier stuff.
He was only 57.
I know I should be more interested in what the President is doing.
I should listen to his speeches so that I will know first hand what he has to say. I have made no secret of the fact that I don’t like him but what happened when he spoke to congress recently should embarrass the entire country.
People don’t agree. When there is more than one person in any given situation, there will be more than one opinion.
But to have an elected congressman shout out “liar” during a presidential address…well that is not only rude, it reflects badly on us as a nation.
It doesn’t matter whether you like him or not, he is the President of the United States of America and should be respected if for no other reason, because he is.
The Republicans always have ample opportunity to respond to anything that comes out of the oval office.
So if they think he is a liar, they should wait until after the speech and then explain how he has lied in their own forum.
And what, pray tell, was all the bruhaha about the president speaking to students?
I didn’t hear the speech, but have been told it was encouraging them to stay in school because they wouldn’t be able to get a good job if they didn’t.
What is wrong with that?
I must have really missed something by not watching the video music awards show over the weekend. I love music but I hate award shows so I rarely watch one.
But when I saw everybody was commenting on it on Facebook, I felt like I really missed something.
A couple of my Facebook friends explained to me that Kanye (who the heck is he?) interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech by commenting that Beyonce had made a great video. They say it is on youtube so I will have to check it out.
Is rudeness becoming accepted behavior? Not to me it isn’t.
Well with all the social unrest and the health care upheaval and don’t forget we are still at war, I am not too worried about what a wealthy entertainer says or does. His mama ought to smack his mouth when he is rude.
And speaking of being rude… I have followed marching band for many years and have attended dozens of contests.
I have experienced people talking during a band’s performance. I have experienced people coming and going during a performance.
Saturday it was my pleasure to attend the Estill High Marching Engineers first competition of the season. These kids are always well-behaved and I have never seen rude behavior from the band boosters. They are there to support the band. And they are always considerate of the other bands while they are performing.
Saturday there were a couple of students from one of the other schools’ bands sitting near my daughter. I was on the field taking pictures.
She said they made remarks about our band the entire time they were on the field.
There is just no accounting for some people.
All I can say is I am proud of our high school band and it is my privilege and honor to cover their activities for this newspaper.
And I guess that is all I have to say about that, for now anyway.
Legalizing the sale of alcohol in Estill County won’t help anything.
