County Attorneys and law enforcement officials across the state routinely receive complaints regarding abusive posts on websites such a www.topix.com. In response to these numerous complaints the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office has undertaken efforts to assist Kentuckians in having abusive posts removed from the Topix website. Law enforcement officials found that many of these abusive postings involve minor children and deliberately create an environment where false and derogatory comments are permitted and then allowed to remain on the website. Topix has a way to remove these abusive posts but they are costly if one wishes to have the post removed in an expedited manner. Free removal of abusive posts typically takes at least 48 hours.
The Attorney General is concerned that the targets of these abusive posts are being victimized twice—first by the abusive post and then by having to pay to have the posts removed. We receive numerous complaints on an almost daily basis at the Estill County Attorney’s Office regarding these abusive posts. It is important to understand the appropriate way to have these posts removed. We encourage everyone to read the Attorney General’s Press Release on this issue which can be found at http://migration.kentucky.gov/Newsroom/ag/topixletter.htm. This press release will provide valuable instructions explaining how to remove these unwanted posts. It also has an email address for the Attorney General’s Office to report Topix abuse. (firstname.lastname@example.org).
It is important to remember that these websites are meant to be places where people can gather to foster ideas and exchange information. The posting of abusive and malicious allegations are not appropriate and serve no legitimate purpose, especially when it involves minor children. The Attorney General encourages everyone to report any abuses and to follow the removal instructions on the website.
