ECH&GS Moonlight Market Series
Sarah Schmitt from the Kentucky Historical Society will be speaking at the Estill County Historical Society at 133 Broadway for the Moonlight Market series on September 7 at 6:30 p.m. She will be showing us how to collect our family’s oral history. These stories are so valuable, because they tell things that aren’t documented anywhere else and give us mental pictures of day to day life for the members of our family trees. Sarah is the oral history administrator for the Kentucky Oral History Commission, a program dedicated to reaching across the state to record and preserve the diverse stories that are a part of Kentucky’s rich and colorful history. Such a task fits well with her desire to know the whole picture. Show her a portrait of a great leader and she not only will find the subject interesting, but also will want to fill in the missing details. “Louis XIV of France is fascinating, but I want to know more about the process of making those red stockings and the ways in which that traditional occupation was passed to apprentices,” she says. “Through oral history, we can engage those who participated in recent historic processes and events, interacted with historic objects or carry the oral traditions of those who did.” Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and history and a master’s degree in folk studies, both from Western Kentucky University.

Mental Health Awareness
Mental illness is more prevalent than most think. It has been reported that one in five Americans experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Mental illnesses are as real as other physical illnesses and they can be treated. By acting early and effectively many of the mental illnesses can be prevented from progressing or even occurring in the first place. Education and awareness are essential parts of eliminating the mental health stigma. Mental Illness does not discriminate. It affects all ages, races, cultures and genders. Come learn more about breaking down the stigma and be a part of open discussions on mental health issues in your community. This lesson will be held at the Estill County Extension Office on Monday, August 27, 2018 at noon. This program is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend this lesson presented by Kay Denniston, Bourbon County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences. If you would like to sign up to attend this program, please call your Family & Consumer Sciences Agent, Thays Flores at 606-723-4557.
