American Legion’s Birthday

Body Fitness Classes with Sister Loretta Spotilla
Body Fitness exercise classes with Sister Loretta Spotila, RN will begin January 29, at the Estill County Extension Office on Stacy Lane, the class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., a $3 donation per class. The classes are helpful for persons with arthritis, asthma, and difficulty moving. The classes will have gentle exercise and movement. The classes help build strength and flexibility. Breakfast for Charlie Company
There will be a breakfast held for all retired and former National Guard members from the Charlie Company 1st/149th the first Friday every month, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Craker Barrell in Richmond.
Casting Call for Children’s Play
What would happen if a modern day Alice fell into the classic Wonderland? Come audition and find out. River City Players is putting on a children’s play, Alice@Wonderland, this spring. The play is 65 minutes long and the targeted cast is 8-18. Auditions will be held on Thursday, March 8 and Monday, March 12 from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Estill County High School auditorium.
Chemical Demilitarization Meeting
On, Wednesday, March 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Eastern Kentucky University, Carl D. Perkins Building, Rooms A & B – Lobby Level, Kit Carson Drive, in Richmond, local leaders will discuss topics related to the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant. Cooking Around the World-Australia
If you love to try new foods and learn about different countries, Cooking Around the World is a hands on program where we get to cook and taste different dishes from around the world and also learn about that country and their culture. You will learn how to prepare easy and delicious recipes that represents each country. This program is free and any age is welcome, so invite your kids or grandkids. March’s program will highlight the foods and culture of Australia and will be on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the Estill County Extension Office. Donate Blood, Y’ALL!
Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) is encouraging Kentuckians to roll up their sleeves, donate blood and help Kentucky patients. As a thank you, those who register to give blood at the drive below will receive this fun “Donate blood, y’all” purple T-shirt. The Estill County Community
may donate on Sat., March 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church in the Fellowship Hall at 270 Main Street in Irvine.
Blood donors must be 17-years-old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.

Estill County 4-H Teen Club Fundraiser
The 4-H Teen Club will be having a yard sale on Saturday, March 10, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. This fundraiser is to help raise money for leadership trips planned for this Spring and Summer. The location will be at the Estill County Extension Office located at 76 Golden Court, off of Stacy Lane. Some of the things our Teens will be using the money they raise for include: Washington DC Ag Policy trip, Teen Leadership Conference, Teen Leadership Summit, Southern Regional Leadership Conference, and Kentucky Issues Conference.

The Estill County Democrat Women’s Club will meet on March 13 at the golf club at 5:30 p.m. The Estill County Democratic Executive Committee will meet on March 15 at 6 p.m. at the Estill County Public Library.

Hospital plans Ladies Night for Heart Health Awareness
Marcum & Wallace Hospital will sponsor a Ladies Night Out for Heart Health Awareness on Thursday, March 15, at 5:30 p.m. at Rice Station Christian Church (located at 1675 Rice Station Road in Irvine).
This free event will feature a presentation by Dr. Paula Hollingsworth, a cardiologist with Baptist Health Lexington. All ladies who attend will receive a free dinner, health education and giveaways.
Dr. Hollingsworth will discuss the signs, symptoms and prevention of heart attacks in women. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women; that’s approximately one woman every minute. 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
“It’s important for women to be educated about heart disease,” said Dr. Paula Hollingsworth. “The symptoms of a heart attack and heart disease can be different in women versus men, and are often misunderstood.”

Hunter’s Education Class
There will be a Hunter’s Education Class (orange card) at the Estill County Extension Office. The 3-day class will be Thursday and Friday, March 22nd & 23rd from 6-9 p.m., and Saturday, March 24th starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Estill Co. Sportsmen’s Club. You must attend all 3 classes to obtain your orange card. Ages 9 and older (as of March 24). Effective March 1, 2014, KY Dept. of Fish & Wildlife requires online pre-registration for all hunter education courses statewide. Kiwanis Club of Irvine-Ravenna
The Kiwanis Club of Irvine-Ravenna will meet Thursday, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. at Steam Engine Pizza. Samuel Adams, Estill County Music teacher, will talk about the guitar program. Kiwanis clubs focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it’s located.
Mountain Mushroom Festival Events Registration
The Mountain Mushroom Festival invites the community to get involved in the activities and events of the festival. Guidelines and registration forms for the Mountain Mushroom Festival events are available in Irvine City Hall and on the festival website: www.mountainmushroomfestival.org. The events are the Arts & Crafts Booths, Fungus 5K & 2K Run/Walk, and Parade. Other activities that have prizes and/or rosettes are the Mushroom Cook-Off, Mushroom Hunting Contest, Fungus 5K, Cake Decorating Contest, Photography Contest, and Window Decorating Contest. Photo Contest Workshop
Estill County 4-H has teamed up with the Mountain Mushroom Festival to host a photography workshop for adults and kids who plan on entering this year’s 2018 Mountain Mushroom Festival Photo Contest. Local artist Patti Reese will discuss and demonstrate general techniques, criteria, scoring and contest rules. The workshop will be at the extension office located at 76 Golden Court, on Tuesday, March 13, at 4 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a camera. Call 723-4557 to sign up.

Southeast KY Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Club
The Southeast KY Gem, Mineral & Fossil Club will meet Monday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at the public library. The program will be a “Show, Tell, & Trade.” Plans will be made for the agate hunts before the Mountain Mushroom Festival and the KY Agate, Gem, & Mineral Show during the festival. Visitors are welcome to attend. Membership forms will be available for anyone interested in joining the group. Yearly dues are $15 for individuals and $20 for families.
Tots Express School Readiness Program
Tots Express is a program to introduce 3 to 5 year old children to pre-school and help them become Kindergarten ready while also teaching parents strategies to help their child succeed. This is open to children who are not currently enrolled in pre-school at South Irvine Early Learning Center. Dates are: March 9, March 23*, April 13, and April 27, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Attendance at each session is encouraged to ensure your child gets the greatest benefit of the program. Please note some dates may change due to weather. If Estill County Schools are closed, Tots Express will be cancelled. Tots Express classes are at South Irvine Early Learning Center. Veterans Benefits Field Representative to be at Estill County Library
A Veterans Benefits Field Representative will be at the Estill County Library the first Thursday of each month. Veterans will be seen by appointment only. Veterans and their dependents will receive assistance filing for Federal and State veterans benefits. This service is provided free of charge by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. West Irvine SBDM will be the third Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m.
