The Lady Engineers basketball team suffered a 68-48 defeat to the top-seeded Lee County Bobcats in the first round of the 56th district tournament. After this tough loss, the girls finish their season with an 11-17 record.
As Estill challenged Lee for the chance to play in the district championship, the Lady Engineers had trouble on both sides of the ball; offensively, the team could not get a rhythm and struggled to have any solid possessions; defensively, Estill couldn’t stop Lee’s senior standout Hannah Cash.
This outcome is certainly not what the Lady Engineers wanted, but this stinging defeat will no doubt serve as fuel for Estill’s returning players. There are several young, talented girls coming up for this team who have developed remarkably over this season. If they continue the path they’re on, hopefully the Engineers will be able to come out on top in the future.
Despite the sad ending to their season, the girls managed to snag a couple more wins last week in the regular season; they defeated Breathitt County 54-36 and Garrard 56-31.
For those interested in seeing how the rest of the 56th district plays out, Powell County and Lee County will be facing off at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Lee County.
