Adopt a Road
Would you like to make a difference and help keep Estill County beautiful? If you’ve answered yes to both these questions, then we may be able to help!!We are enrolling new groups and making new assignments for our Adopt-a-Road program. We want to work with your club, church group or other 501c3 to clean-up our county roadsides. We will pay qualified groups $50 per mile, provide trash bags, vests and gloves up to 3 times per year. AA meets Tuesday through Sunday at 8 p.m. at 167 Broadway, Irvine. We have two noon meetings on Wednesday and Saturday. The new women’s meeting is !:30 p.m. on Saturday. There are no fees or dues. For more information call 723-6429.
The Al-Anon group will meet every Thursday at noon at WestCare and every Monday at 105 Main Street at 7 p.m. Al-Anon is a meeting for family members and friends of those with alcohol abuse problems. Call 723-3018 for more information.
American Legion Riders Bike Show
The American Legion Riders of Post #79 will once again be hosting the Mountain Mushroom Bike Show, Saturday, April 29, in the parking lot behind the courthouse. The group welcomes all motorcycle owners and enthusiasts to join them to raise money for local charities. Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, April 30. So polish the chrome, wax the tank and ride your bike to Mushroom Festival. A $15 entry fee is all that’s needed to enter one of six plus classes. Dash plaques will be given to the first 50 who register. The American Legion Riders is a national non-profit veteran’s motorcycle association with our local Irvine chapter receiving its charter in 2005. We share the enjoyment of motorcycles, the thrill of riding the scenic back-roads of Eastern Kentucky and our tremendous friendships. We proudly honor and support our local Veterans, as well as local charities.
Beginner Yoga at Marcum & Wallace Hospital
Beginner Yoga class at Marcum & Wallace Hospital is held in the Mercy Room each Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. with instructor Laritza Gomez. The cost in one non-perishable food item for Helping Hands Outreach Ministry. Bring your own yoga mat. The instructor will guide the one-hour class through basic poses focused on relaxation, building core strength and flexibility. For more information, contact 606-726-2119.
Board of Commissioners meeting
The second Tuesday of each month the Board of Commissioners meet at Irvine Housing Authority, 285 Mountain Crest, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Body Fitness classes
Body Fitness exercise classes with instructor Sister Loretta Spotila, R.N. The classes are helpful for persons with arthritis, asthma, difficulty moving. The classes use gentle exercise and movement to build strength and flexibility. Classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Estill County Extension Offices located on Golden Court off of Stacy Lane Road. A $3 donation is suggested per class. Charlie Company Breakfasts
There will be breakfasts for all retired and old guard members of Charlie Company 1/149th, at the Cracker Barrel in Richmond. The breakfasts will be the first Friday of every month stating at 9 a.m. All are invited and welcome. Hope to see you there.
Civil War and Native American Artifact Show and Sale
The show will be April 28, 29, 30 at the Estill County Fairgrounds show barn during the Mountain Mushroom Festival in Irvine. Vendors from Kentucky and out-of-state will be present to show, buy and sell. Come by and see displays of historic Civil War items and Native American artifacts. Bring your items by for an evaluation. Also included will be displays of pocket knives and antique canning jars. While there, visit the antique engine show on the fairgrounds sponsored by The Hillbilly Flywheelers. Admission to both events is free. The Estill County Community Chorus will be having spring rehearsals every Thursday, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Irvine United Methodist Church, at 243 Main Street, for the spring concert scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. Rose Daniels is the chorus director. Four Seasons Garden Club
The Four Seasons Garden Club will meet Thursday, April 20 at 3 p.m. at the Estill County Extension Office. “Nuisance Insects” will be presented by Eric Baker, Extension Agent. The public is welcome to attend. The object of the club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs; to aid in the protection of native trees, plants, and birds; and to promote cleanliness, beauty, and improvement of property in Estill County. New members are welcome to join the club which meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The Four Seasons Garden Club is a member of the National Council of State Garden Club, Inc.
Farmers’ Market Meeting
The April Farmers’ Market meeting will be on Wednesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at the Estill County Extension office. All regular vendors, as well as new ones or those interested in becoming members, are encouraged to attend. If you have scales, please bring them with you to be certified. This will be the last opportunity to get certified to accept senior vouchers, and we will be discussing our Mushroom Festival booth. Furry Friends Fashion Show
The Spanish community club will be hosting the Furry Friends Fashion Show on Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. at the central office lawn. Registration fee is $10 for the first pet and $5 for every entry thereafter. Registrations can be picked up at the Estill County High School, Cole Insurance Company on Richmond Road, or printed off the Mountain Mushroom Festival’s Website. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for cats; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for dogs; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for the variety category. Also, to come and watch the show, there will be a minimal $2 donation. All proceeds go to help the Estill County animal shelter.
Kentucky Homeplace Offers

The Kiwanis Club of Irvine-Ravenna will meet Thursday, April 20, at Michael’s Restaurant. “Health Screenings” will be conducted by Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital staff. If you are interested in becoming a member of the service organization that has a sense of community, a source of fulfillment and a history of impact, join us at 5:30 p.m. (to eat) or 6:00 p.m. (meeting/program) on Thursday evenings.
Mountain Mushroom Festival T-Shirts
The 2017 Mountain Mushroom Festival t-shirts and mugs will be for sale in Irvine City Hall, 101 Chestnut St., until Friday, April 29 at noon. The festival t-shirts range in size from youth to adult sizes with a mushroom design to celebrate the 27 years of the festival. The jade dome color t-shirts are short-sleeve. Sweatshirts and long sleeve t-shirts in large and X-large are available in kelly green. During the festival the t-shirts will be for sale in the gazebo on Broadway.
Mushroom Festival Events Registration
The Mountain Mushroom Festival invites the community to get involved in the activities and events of the festival. Guidelines and registration forms for the Mountain Mushroom Festival events are available in Irvine City Hall and on the festival website: www.mountainmushroomfestival.org. The events are the Arts & Crafts Booths, Fungus 5K & 2K Run/Walk, Parade, and Mushroom Festival pageant. Other activities that have cash prizes are the Mushroom Cook-Off, Mushroom Hunting Contest, Fungus 5K, Cake Decorating Contest, Photography Contest, and Window Decorating Contest. Spiritual Recovery Group
A spiritual recovery group for those who have addiction or other oppression struggles will be meeting every Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Westcare community room located at 180 Main Street. Anyone may attend; come as you are. Pastor Chris Carlyle leads a class for those with struggle with addiction and spiritual oppression. If you are tired of fighting the darkness alone and want recovery of your spiritual identity in Christ, please come for this unusual event. Find the path back to the light.
Take a trip to Pennsylvania Amish County

Tots Express School Readiness Program
Three and four year-olds, as well as their parents and grandparents/guardians, are invited to Tots Express on April 28. The purpose of the school readiness program is to introduce three and four year-olds to pre-school and help them become kindergarten ready while also teaching parents strategies to help their child succeed. Tree Seedling Giveaway
The Estill County Conservation District will have tree seedlings to give to Estill County landowners on Thursday, April 20. Seedlings will be given away on a first come limited basis, as long as the trees last. Seedlings may be picked up at the Estill County Conservation District office building located at 1505 Richmond Road, Irvine, across from Bunt Gross Auto between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The species available will be: Pawpaw, Kentucky Coffee Tree, Black Walnut, River Birch, Gray Dogwood, Pecan, and Chestnut Oak.
