Estill County native Donnie Murphy and his son Jimmy Murphy are living the dream of many father/son duos.
The two have teamed up together and are currently running a small engine repair shop on Broadway. Donnie Murphy has over 35 years experience repairing lawnmowers and other small engines, and his son Jimmy has around three years experience. Both men are licensed and certified small engine mechanics. The real muscle behind the business though, comes from Donnie’s beautiful wife Mary who answers the phones, keeps the books, and as Donnie would put it, “keeps us so busy we can’t sit around.”
Until about five months ago Donnie Murphy was working from his home garage doing small engine repair jobs; business was going well for him so he decided to look for a bigger, better location. He found his new location at 187 Broadway across the street from the old Wolfinbarger’s building, and things keep getting better.
I asked Jimmy what made him decide to follow in his dad’s footsteps.
“I was gone from Irvine for about 15 years,” he said. “When I moved back, I decided to start helping Dad. I really just wanted to spend some time with him, but then I realized that working on small engines was something I enjoyed as well.”
When I reversed the question and asked Donnie what he thought about having Jimmy around, he laughed and said, “He’s alright I guess.” Murphy then assured me he was joking, “I love it,” he said, “I couldn’t do this on my own, and who better to pass my knowledge down to than my son?”
The two pride themselves in being fast and affordable. Their hourly rates are super low, and they offer local pick-up and delivery for only $20. They work on items that range from weed eaters and lawn mowers to motorcycles and golf carts. Murphy’s Small Engine Repair also sharpens chainsaws and repairs generators, and there is no need to worry about any item they are working on as their business is under 24-hour surveillance.
Oh yeah, and did I mention they keep the coffee hot? Stop in and sit a spell with the Murphy’s. Bring your chainsaw over to get ready for winter, or just swing by and get a quote on having a minor mower repair done. The company is great, and you are sure to find friendship, laughter and a great price on mechanical work. This family business appears to be on the road to great success.
