Larry Hatfield, 57
Lawrence ”Larry” Hatfield, 57, of Hopkinsville, formerly of Irvine, died Sunday in Hopkinsville. He was born June 9, 1952 in Gary Ind. a son of the late Guy Jr. and Lucy Baker Hatfield. He was also preceded in death by a brother Guy Hatfield III.
Survivors include a brother, Scott Baker Hatfield; a sister, Ruth Ann Phelan; nieces and a nephew.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Private burial was held at West Irvine Cemetery.
Vivian Cole, 78
Mary Vivian Thomas Cole, 78, High Street, Irvine, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 at her daughter’s home after a short illness. She was born May 30, 1931 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Francis Jennings and Martha Johnson Thomas. She was a retired Kroger employee and attended the Church of God. She had lived in Estill County all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy L. Cole.
Survivors include her daughter, Lois Cole Stamper of Nicholasville; a son, Rick Cole of Nicholasvile; one sister, Edwina Richardson of Hamilton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kristie Tomlian, Amanda Bowman, Lucas Stamper and Amber Cole Holloway; seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas Bowman, Liam Stamper, Benjamin Tomlian, Cole Bowman, Ariella Tomlian, Samuel Tomlian, and Emerson Stamper; her nephew, Kyle Richardson.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 1 at 2 0.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Larry Buford with burial at the Oakdale Cemetery.Pallbearers were Buzzy Hurst, Denzel Cole, Lucas Stamper, Mike Chaney, Kenny Cole, and Roger Thomas.
Sue Henderson, 63
Sue Ann Hunt Henderson, 63, Hudson Avenue, Irvine, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at the Compassionate Care Center after a long illness. She was born Sept. 16, 1946 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Elmer and Roberta Riddell Hunt. She was a homemaker and a member of River Drive Christian Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Arvel Henderson; two sons, Jeffery Scott Henderson of North Carolina and Mark Lewis Henderson of South Dakota; one sister, Carol Arthur of Estill County; one brother, Harold Hunt of Georgetown; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Lou Elkin.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Paul Groves with burial at the Oakdale Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert Vaughn, Kevin Puckett, Scott Jones, Bill Beard, Art Beard and Wayne Hamblin.
Billy Newton, 75
Billy Carl Newton, 75, Kirkland Drive, Lexington, formerly of Irvine, died Wednesday at the Bourbon County Community Hospital. He was a native of Estill County, born Feb. 16, 1934, a son of the late Everett Newton and Bertha Barnes Newton. He was a retired Army National Guard Colonel, he was owner of Southern Industrial, a member of the Iron Workers Union for 55 years, a Shriner and a member of the Irvine Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Station Camp Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his brother Darryl Isaacs.
Survivors include his wife Carol Coomer Newton, two daughters Kelli (Steve) Shelton, Whitney Newton; three sons Kevin (Chrissy) Newton, Mark (Lori) Newton, Eric ( Elizabeth) Burch; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother Gary Isaacs.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home, by Bro. Scott Beauchamp with burial at the West Irvine Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Shelton, Tyler Sexton, Eric Burch, J. T. Blankenship, Larry Allen Smith, Andy Ream, Mark Newton, Kevin Newton and Andy Mahoney.
Alena Powell, 67
Alena Powell, 67, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Modena Lakes; grandson, Joshua Creech; brothers, Billy Ray and Charles E. Lakes, and sister, Ella Mae Lakes.
She is survived by her husband of 50+ years, Henry Powell; children, Sandra Livesay, Randell Powell, and Connie Creech; brothers, James, Delbert, and Johnny Lakes; sister, Lucille Durham; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd., Kettering.

Doris Farthing, 74
Doris Ann Farthing, 74, Minor Lane, Irvine, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at the University of Kentucky medical Center after a sudden illness. She was born May 26, 1935 in Estill County, the daughter of Mable Dee McPherson Edmonson and the late Virgil Lee Edmonson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Irvine First Baptist Church. She was an accomplished musician and served as her church pianist for over 60 years. She had lived in Estill County all of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Davinal Farthing; her mother, Mable Dee McPherson Edmonson of Irvine; one daughter, Judy Ann Garrett and husband Gary of Georgetown; one son, Billy Ray Farthing and wife Sandra Kaye of Paintsville; one sister, Virginia Croucher and husband Mike of Irvine; one brother, James Harvey Edmonson and wife Teresa of Paris; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; and her beloved pet, Teddy.
She was preceded in death by two sons, David Glenn and Bobby Lee Farthing; one brother, Raymond Edmonson.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. at Irvine First Baptist Church by Rev. Chris Winkler with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Jonathon Bailey, 33
Jonathon Al Bailey, 33, Substation Road, Irvine, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 at his home following a long illness. He was born Feb. 17, 1976 in Richmond, Ind. and was the son of Sue Gabbard Bailey and the late James Alton Bailey III.
Survivors include his mother, Sue Gabbard Bailey; two daughters, Brittany Renee Bailey of Somerset and Angelica Bailey of Estill County; one son, Jonathon Alton Cody Bailey of Estill County; two sisters, Carrie Sue Morris and husband Clifton of Wolfe County, and Brenda Faye Noe and husband Virgil of Covington; two brothers, Jeffery Alan Bailey and James C. Bailey, both of Estill County; several nieces and nephews.

Maggie Shiflet, 96
Maggie L. Shiflet, 96, Moraine, Ohio, formerly of Estill County, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. She was born June 19, 1913, the daughter of the late Newton John and Dora Cook Tuttle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. Shiflet; two brothers, Cecil Tuttle and Brown Tuttle; and four sisters, Bartha Fox, Allie Boian, Hazel Reed and Vina B. Rose.
Survivors include her children, Thelma Newton and husband Lohris, Wilbur Shiflet and Judy Masters; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Tuttle of Estill County, and Glendon Tuttle of Indiana; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Beverly Arvin with burial at the Boian Cemetery.

Mary Sparks, 72
Mary Lois Sparks. 72, Little Doe Creek Road, Irvine, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010 at the Compassionate Care Center after a long illness. She was born March 2, 1973 in Estill County, the daughter of the late Hume Waters and Maude Wells Alcorn. She was a CNA and had lived in Estill County most of her life.
Survivors include her husband, James E. Sparks; one daughter, Marilyn Tyree and husband Glynn of Irvine; two sons, James L. Sparks and Lewis Sparks, both of Irvine; daughter-in-law, Maricruz Parker; four sisters, Juanita Middleton of Dry Ridge, Delma Fox of Sutherlin, Oregon, Mildred Kelly and Cornelia Hale, both of Irvine; four brothers, Garry Alcorn and wife Linda and Jim Alcorn, both of Connersville, Ind., Tom Alcorn of Ravenna, Ray Alcorn of Marine City, Mich.; six grandchildren, Patricia (Cecil) Dixon, Joshua McIntosh, Sandy Sparks, J.R. (Shaina) Sparks, Stacy Sparks and Mary Tyree; seven great-grandchildren, Makayla Trimble, Annalissa Trimble, Toni Watkins, David Dixon, Hayden McIntosh, Daniel Dixon and Makenzie Smith.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and June Alcorn.
Memorial services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at New Beginning Fellowship Church by Rev. Delvin Reece.
Rhea Fox, 78
Rhea Williams Fox, 78, widow of the late Elbert Fox, of McKee Road, died Monday. She was born Nov. 10, 1931 in Estill County, a daughter of the late Charlie Williams and Lena Isaacs Williams. She was a member of Sandfield Pentecostal Church, a homemaker, and loved to quilt and raise a vegetable garden.
Survivors include her two sons, Cloyd J. (Maxine) Fox of Irvine and Archie (Emma) Fox of Clark County; three grandchildren, Elbert Jason Fox, Alma Nichole Fox, Alexandra Kirkwood; one great grandson, David Clifton Kirkwood.
Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home, with Bro. Beverly Arvin officiating. Burial will follow in the Fox Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.
